MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTSDuring the 2001-2002 school year many challenges were met and many accomplishments were acquired. The first area we had to make a major change was the revision of our school curriculum. When our charter was approved the curriculum in place did not meet the needs of our students. During the 2001-2002 school year we accomplished the development of our curriculum with the assistance of Felician College. We have been able to complete it and during the 2002 school year we will evaluate the effectiveness of it towards our students. We also implemented for the first time a school safety program. This consisted of supervising the arrival and dismissal of students, approaching students that found themselves in difficult situations and doing peer mediation with them, developing workshops for the staff in the areas of prejudice and racism, hatred and how to deal with the students that presented these conflicts. Another area that was achieved was the bully program. This program provides the students with the opportunity to express their feelings towards being a bully and being bullied around by classmates, friends and outsiders. Our students enjoyed participating in this program since it provides them the opportunity to express their feelings and seek the assistance that is needed in order to improve in this area. Professional development was another accomplishment acquired during the 2001-2002 school year. Since the beginning of the charter we provided professional development, however, during this year Felician College committed themselves to assist us in this area. Topics covered were:
During year three it was necessary to comply with the training for all Board Members. During this year four of our Board of Trustees attended the New Jersey School Boards Association training. Even though some members have been in our board since the beginning we are all committed to attend the training during the following academic year. Another accomplishment that we did maintain for the third consecutive year is to have a structured and dedicated Board of Trustees. All Board Members have made a real commitment to the school and are always willing to provide the school with the assistance necessary to succeed. They become involved in all activities possible and make sure that all students feel secure and happy in our environment. We also observed an increase in test scores during this year. Our eighth grade students demonstrated an increase in scores in the areas of reading and science for the GEPA and in the Stanford 9 Test an increase was seen in all areas. We truly believe that our students are working toward s improvement in all areas. During the 2001-2002 school year we developed a stronger parental and community involvement. With the community we had our students involved with agencies such as: CURA, FOCUS, St. Columba Neighborhood Club, Lions Club, NJPAC,and many others. On the other hand we also received additional assistance from Felician College, Kean College, and Rutgers University. Our parents became an important part of our charter during these three years. They had to attend several open house schedules in order to receive their son/daughter(s) report card. They also attended several meetings in order to get acquainted with the activities in the school. Parents were invited to join us during our Thanksgiving lunch, international lunch, Christmas program, Black History Month Program, Ring Ceremony, and Picnics with CURA Inc. |
